Do I need engineered plans for a shed or screen enclosure?

Sheds, carports, pergolas, and screen enclosures are common accessory projects, and in South Florida many of them require engineered plans to permit, because the structure has to resist wind uplift and pressure for your wind zone.

This guide covers the usual triggers. The requirement depends on size, type, and jurisdiction, which we confirm for your project.

Sheds and accessory structures

Above a certain size, jurisdictions generally require engineered anchorage and tie-down for sheds and similar structures, checked against verified hardware capacity, so the structure resists uplift and overturning.

Screen enclosures

Screen enclosures typically require engineered members and connections showing the aluminum frame resists wind pressure on the screen walls and roof, per the Florida Building Code and aluminum framing standards.

Why light structures are governed by uplift, not weight

A shed or enclosure weighs very little, so its own weight does almost nothing to hold it down against hurricane suction. That flips the design: the anchorage governs. The calculation checks that the structure resists uplift and overturning and traces that force all the way into the ground, hold-downs and straps sized to the members, and base anchors sized to the slab or footing they land in, with the concrete's own capacity checked at each anchor.

Screen enclosures are their own case. The porous screen sheds some wind, so it is designed for a reduced but real pressure per the aluminum-framing provisions, and the load still has to run through the chair rails, beams, and purlins, into cable or knee bracing, and down to anchors at the deck. The specific members, spacing, and anchors depend on the span, height, and wind zone, which we confirm.

Questions

Why does a lightweight shed need heavy-looking anchorage?

Because a light structure has almost no self-weight to resist wind uplift, so the tie-down and anchors, not the mass, keep it in place. The engineering sizes the hold-downs and base anchors to carry the uplift and overturning into the slab or footing, and checks the concrete's capacity at each anchor.

Is there a size below which I don't need engineering?

Many jurisdictions exempt very small accessory structures, but the threshold varies and HVHZ rules can change it. We confirm whether your specific shed, carport, or enclosure needs sealed engineering before starting.
